A Classic Design

These crane scissors are an heirloom design dating back to the 19th century.  This style of scissors is simple yet elegant with a dash of humor.  With a silver beak, a gold body, and the tiny screw to dot the eye, a crane is the ideal shape for a pair of petite snips .  These stainless steel scissors are a classic design that may remind every sewing and embroidery enthusiast of another bird: the stork.  Both fowls have long beaks with bodies that sit on top of reed-like legs that have inspired other useful tools that cut, snip, and sever (see a brief history of the crane scissors below for more information).  No embroidery maven or stitch witch can go without a small pair of snips, but beginners may want a less extravagant pair to start.  The shape or style of the scissors is up to the individual, but if a simple pair will do, then these crane scissors may be for you.  So don’t wait, buy today!

A Quick History Lesson

As promised, the history of the crane scissors began with the profession of midwifery.  This tool was more clamp than scissor and was made in the shape of a stork.  The “stork clamp” was used to trim the umbilical cord on newborns.  The stork is the bird most associated with giving birth because of their migration patterns.  Storks begin their migration in the summer and return in the spring which, coincidentally, matched the spike in birth rates (or so they say).  Funnily enough, storks, because of their size, constructed their nests on rooftops near chimneys.  Thus the myth of the stork dropping a baby into a chimney was born.  So don’t wait to create a cute little cap and baby booties for the newest edition to your family!

A Memorable Design

A small strand of wing sits above the handles with a beak that squawks open when the legs are separated and clamps shut when united, but don’t let these scissors walk all over your project.  It is best to take care and snip with precision.  These scissors may look like an antique but be careful, beaks (and scissors) are sharp and pointy so make sure to handle them safely!  Whether you’re sewing a quilt or perfecting embroidery stitches, a pair of scissors is a necessity.  Let this pair of scissors become a part of your sewing kit today!
